Carbon TradeEx was held at Chicago’s McCormick Place Sep. 28th-29th. The Chicago Clean Energy Alliance & Climatini was a co-sponsor of the related networking event held in the main atrium of the Field Museum the evening of the 28th. Over 300 people were in attendance and the atmosphere was lively. While the typical Clean Energy Alliance & Climatini is more of a local meetup, the conference brought in many people from out of town which made for an excellent event.

One of the recurring themes at past Clean Energy Alliance & Climatini events has been frustration at the lack of progress made by Congress on the issue of clean energy and cap and trade/emissions regulation. While clean energy is still a major focus, consulting services in greenhouse gas accounting and toxic land reclamation were discussed more often than carbon credits. Basic accounting services are being desired by more companies even if there are not mandatory emissions requirements to ensure future developments do not catch them unawares.

There was optimism amongst attendees for future legislative developments but the upcoming midterm elections makes it unlikely anything will happen, unless there is an unforeseen lame duck push by Congress at the end of the year. Several attendees mentioned that this year’s CarbonTradeEx was the most significant large climate finance gathering since the Waxman-Markey bill was first released. The private sector has accepted the fact that Congress will not act anytime soon, there are clear legal issues if the EPA tries to proceed next year on its own and California’s AB32 is seen as the last best hope to kick starting CO2 emissions regulation here in the US. 18 months ago it seemed like Congress was ready to act, the EPA wasn’t supposed to have to play the heavy and there was Republican support from the Governor of California for GHG emissions regulations.

At this time next year the landscape will probably be much clearer. Consulting and legal services will probably continue to thrive no matter what happens in the climate finance space while financial services and clean energy research are going to need clarification from Congress in order to really take off. We hope to see everyone at the next Clean Energy Alliance & Climatini events to talk about new developments later this Fall.

The lack of clarity from Congress has left many renewable energy projects hamstrung and the possibility of federal cap-and-trade is all but a distant memory.  While California’s AB32 calls for a statewide cap-and-trade system to be enacted in 2012, GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has openly stated she will kill the program if elected.  The success that seemed to be certain in April ’09 as Waxman-Markey was released now looks uncertain, even unlikely.  In spite of this several attendees talked of new companies they were starting up to provide emissions and sustainability consulting services.  The expectation seems to be that there will still be demand from corporate interests for voluntary emissions reductions and environmentally responsible practices, regardless of what government does.

Although it is difficult to be optimistic about the progress of energy/climate legislation, the automotive sector seems to be finally committed to producing more efficient vehicles using alternative fuels and the BP disaster will hopefully result in new commitments to clean energy.  The private sector will ultimately dictate whether or not clean energy and sustainable practices prevail in the market and events like Climatini are crucial to enabling the inter-industry connections required to implement such ideas.  We look forward to seeing everyone again at our next event, at a date TBA in late September or early October.

Several people commented on the coming wave of electric vehicles (EVs) over the next couple of years.  This is a welcome development for emissions reductions but there is still a great deal of infrastructure that needs to be built for charging EVs away from home.  There were a few people working on smart grid applications and one scientist was involved in Superfund cleanup.  There was some interesting discussion on low-light solar technology as well.  There was also some talk of carbon credits and carbon trading but until there is some clarity on cap-and-trade, interest in those areas may suffer.

The topic that came up more than any other was the need for Congress to enact some sort of meaningful clean energy and/or climate bill before the midterm elections.  Everyone agreed that the Waxman-Markey bill and subsequent tabling of discussion by the Senate was a big disappointment last year.  This government inaction could result in private enterprise losing interest due to a lack of clear signal on how to proceed.  It also fails to hold dirty power producers accountable for their environmental impact.  There is a Lieberman/Graham/Kerry-type of bill that is expected to be announced around the end of April.  If nothing gets done by Memorial day, expect the EPA to start getting involved in the process.  Either way there should be a lot to discuss at the next Climatini in June, thanks to everyone who showed up and made for another great event!

This second event drew attendees from the region as well as internationally.

There were guests from a Canadian building products company and a London energy developer that had heard about Climatini through the grapevine.

Several people showed up from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District to mingle with real estate consultants, developers and supply chain companies.

We rolled out “The Climatini”, and powerful straight-up martini that may in fact serve a double purpose as an alternative fuel in the future!

While many of us look outside the region for business and opportunity, we realize the importance of creating a community here where we live to further the development of our network and knowledge-base.  Climatini realizes that purpose by being an open forum for knowledge transfer in a friendly casual environment.

We look forward to growing Climatini in the future and appreciate the participation of all those who attended this event.  The next Climatini event will be held in April 2010 so please stay tuned for more details.
